PFIZER WILL SUPPLY PATENT MEDICINES TO POOR COUNTRIES AT A REDUCED PRICE

In a significant move towards global health equity, Pfizer, the American pharmaceutical giant, has declared its willingness to provide access to its patented medicines to impoverished nations at no charge. This altruistic gesture is a part of a new international endeavor, “Accord for a Healthier World,” as AFP reports.

This announcement is expected to amplify the accessibility of medical treatment for infectious, oncological, inflammatory, and rare diseases, as well as women’s health disorders. Pfizer, which possesses 23 drugs under patent protection in these sectors, will make them all available to the destitute populations in the form of non-commercial costs.

Thus far, several nations, including Rwanda, Ghana, Malawi, Senegal, and Uganda, have confirmed their involvement in the program. In addition, 40 other countries have been given the authority to sign up to take part in the initiative.

Currently, developing countries carry 70% of the worldwide disease burden but only make up for 15% of health spending. Hence, Pfizer’s initiative is a vital step forward in addressing global health disparities.
